Nominate An Unsung Hero Volunteer for the Jefferson Award - Due Date February 16th
The Jefferson Awards are presented on two levels: national and local. National award recipients represent a “Who’s Who” of outstanding Americans. Winners include three Supreme Court Justices, eight U.S. Senators, six Secretaries of State, eleven Cabinet Officers and three former First Ladies. On the local level, Jefferson Awards recipients are ordinary people who do extraordinary things without expectation of recognition or reward. To help us identify and celebrate these “Unsung Heroes,” in 1977, the Institute developed a Media Partnership with electronic and print media. Each year in the Supreme Court, the highlight of the national ceremony is the five grassroots “Unsung Heroes”. These five winners reflect the millions of Americans that volunteer in our local neighborhoods and are featured in a National Television special highlighting excellence in service to America. The special presents the national Jefferson Awards winners with special emphasis on the five grassroots “Unsung Heroes.”

We hope the New Year finds you and your community doing well. ABC2 and the Governor’s Office on Service and Volunteerism have joined together to celebrate the work of Maryland’s unsung heroes by nominating them for the Jefferson Award for Public Service.
In 1972, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft, Jr. and Sam Beard founded the American Institute for Public Service, to establish a Nobel Prize for public and community service. The Jefferson Awards for Public Service.

The Jefferson awards are truly an outstanding method by which to recognize Maryland’s unsung heroes. In an effort to salute the outstanding individuals, we need your help. If you know of someone of outstanding character and great service who deserves to be recognized, please nominate someone from your community for the 2007 Jefferson Award for Public Service.
